Uusimaa Region
Uusimaa Region is at the heart of Northern Europe. Its location on the Baltic Sea, its cultural climate and its green landscapes have made it a growing centre for new European business and politics.
As a destination for national migration, the Helsinki metropolitan area is one of the fastest growing urban areas in Europe at the moment. The population of Uusimaa Region is currently growing by about 15 000 people annually, and the proportion of young adults, i.e. under the age of 40, is particularly high.
The most prominent businesses in the region include wholesale trade, finance and insurance services, and information-intensive business services. Most people in the region are employed in the service sector. The region accounts for nearly one third of Finland's national product.
Thanks to effective and efficient communications, both in terms of transport networks and telecommunications, two thirds of foreign companies operating in Finland are based in Uusimaa Region.
Due to the largest university in the country, several institutions of higher education in the field of the arts and sciences, various research centres, Uusimaa Region is a region of expertise.
Half of Finland's research and development facilities are based in Uusimaa Region. One fifth of the region's population of working age has an academic degree, and most young people continue their education beyond their compulsory general schooling, i.e beyond the age of 16 years.

Uusimaa Regional Council has 24 member municipalities, of which Finland's capital Helsinki is the biggest.
From the international point of view, the most important regions for cooperation lie within Europe, especially in the Baltic Sea Region and in Russia. Nordic cooperation is already a tradition.
